The eldest daughter also carries the thalassemia gene but has a mild form, manageable with checkups every 2 months. The 2 children Hữu An Knul and Kiều Mai Knul have severe thalassemia and attend hospital every 30–40 days, depending on their health and the family's finances. When money is available, their mother takes them regularly; otherwise, visits are more than a month apart. Sometimes they attend the district hospital because they cannot afford more; when they have money, they go to the provincial hospital. Each stay averages around 7 days.
