| The family consists of single mother H Trang Niê, Y Huyết Niê, and his younger brother. Ms. Trang does not own a home, so they live with the maternal grandparents. They are classified as near-poor. The grandmother has joint disease and the grandfather has complications from diabetes, so neither can do much hired labor. Ms. Trang also has thalassemia and works as a hired laborer in Saigon, sending around 5 million/month to support the 2 children and grandparents. Both Y Huyết and Y Tuyên have had thalassemia since childhood, though Y Tuyên's case is milder. The grandparents have a few sao (a traditional Vietnamese unit of land area) of fields but no income from them because they cannot afford investment or cultivation. Y Huyết spends around 7–10 days in hospital each month, with expenses of 1,5 million per treatment visit. |
