Dear friend, perhaps you too are facing obstacles and difficulties in every area of life as Covid19 returns. Above all, however, I hope you choose peace and always have peace.
Because of the pandemic, to keep ourselves and those around us safe and at peace, we chose to visit the children through video calls rather than traveling to their homes in person. Strangely enough, even video calls helped us Ambassadors and the Fund's little angels connect, without any sense of unfamiliarity. Our conversations unfolded naturally and warmly.
In this installment of “Sharing the Children's Stories,” I would like to tell you about Trương Công Bằng, a 7-year-old boy from Cà Mau, at the southernmost tip of our beloved S-shaped country. He is currently one of the 35+ children supported by the Gmdctt Fund.
He is a boy with a very sweet voice characteristic of the Mekong Delta. I sensed the optimism and joy of a growing child, even though he is less fortunate than other children: he has bone marrow failure, with countless needle marks from blood transfusions on his small body. He is one of the teachers who has taught me how to live with adversity.
The cost of each checkup is high for a poor rural working family (blood transfusions cost 1-2 million each, medication 3 million/vial, average monthly costs 5 million, and hospital stays of 1 week for fever cost 10 million). With all income dependent on Khanh, the child's father, their worries multiply as the pandemic makes his earnings precarious and unstable. We care deeply about and empathize with his family.
As you can see, the challenges and hardships Covid19 brings us at this time are considerable, but compared with families like Công Bằng's, our difficulties may still be quite “light.”
Throughout almost 3 years of supporting him (from 07/2018 to the present), we have quietly watched over Bằng and prayed for peace for him and the other children with serious blood disorders, hoping all of them can live normal lives.
