Quốc Khang and his dream of building a villa for his mother

Khang is only 7 years old, but when we visited and spoke with him in person, we found him very mature. His adult-like thoughts and behavior left us deeply impressed and fond of him.

Khang was diagnosed with thalassemia – congenital hemolytic anemia – at 2.5 months old.

Khang's biggest dream is to build a really, really big house for his mother.

Khang's love for his mother is very special. His mother says that after one exchange transfusion, his temperament changed completely: he became more irritable and sulky. Yet his love for her never changed; instead, it became even deeper and stronger.

His mother currently sells coffee at a small roadside stall near their home. His father was injured in an accident and has 1 paralyzed arm, so he can no longer help the family much; sometimes the pain leaves him unable to do anything. His mother's voice trembled as she spoke to us, yet she kept smiling openly, with simplicity and sincerity clear on her face. Perhaps that is why, she told us, the neighbors around their rented home in District 12 are especially kind to them, often giving them rice and fish.

We will never forget Khang's face, often set as if he wanted to… take on the whole world just to protect his mother, or his quick, decisive walk that nevertheless revealed the many thoughts carried by a boy only 7 years old.
