They are classified as near-poor. The grandmother has joint disease and the grandfather has complications from diabetes, so neither can do much hired labor. Ms. Trang also has thalassemia and works as a hired laborer in Saigon, sending around 5 million\/month to support the 2 children and grandparents. Both Y Huy\u1ebft and Y Tuy\u00ean have had thalassemia since childhood, though Y Tuy\u00ean's case is milder. The grandparents have a few sao (a traditional Vietnamese unit of land area) of fields but no income from them because they cannot afford investment or cultivation. Y Huy\u1ebft spends around 7\u201310 days in hospital each month, with expenses of 1,5 million per treatment visit.<\/td><\/tr>
